There are people to pick you up when you’re down and help you reach your goals when they’re too high. And there are also people (like me) to just cheer you on. :D

hjm: Just a speck

hjmittal:

Sometimes at night I’ll sit on a rocking chair in our backyard and gaze into the sky. And on a particularly clear and pleasant night, I’ll take a deep breath and marvel at all the tiny sparkling lights that extend into forever. That’s when I begin to realize just how tiny and insignificant I am.

Central Park in Davis, CA.

I spent seven years of my life in this little town after moving there for undergrad in 2004. I took this photo in 2011 after I had quit my job and was waiting to hear back from graduate schools across the country. Behind this rustic old bench was where I helped plant flowers and vegetables with the community to learn about sustainable gardening. This was the pit stop on my frequent bike rides around town. This is the home of picnics and movies in the park and the amazing Davis Farmer’s Market where you can find the best corn dogs you’ll ever eat in your life. This is where college kids and Davis townies intermingle peacefully and kids run around and play in the small jungle gym with the bumpy slide. This is where that old carousel stays perpetually inactive but somehow still magical and ultimate frisbee and kite flying make for an awesome afternoon.

This was the bench I sat on when I realized that the few years I spent in this little cow town was when I did the most growing up.

Davis will always have a place in my heart, and this picture reminds me of the best of it.
